ASTRO on TAP

  • Spot Tavern 409 South 4th Street Lafayette, IN, 47901 United States (map)

Dr. Andrea Rajšić:

NASA’s InSight mission landed on the surface of Mars in November 2018. Since then, we learned that Mars is not the calm, dead planet we expected. The seismometer on this mission detected over 1300 marsquakes. These data helped us better understand the internal structure of Mars and learn about its evolution.

During this talk, I will discuss the importance of geophysical exploration and what we learned from Earthquakes, Moonquakes, and recently, Marsquakes. I will talk about major sources of seismicity on Mars and the Martian interior, as seen by NASA’s InSight.

Jonathan Wood:

The Universe is getting bigger at an ever- increasing rate. Where does the energy driving the expansion come from? This energy, commonly called “dark energy”, might just come from space itself, but exactly what is space?

Let’s dive into how astronomers found the universe is growing and talk about why that might be.
